The city centre

The square of the knights, the “Lungarni”;Boat tours on the Arno river”; The rooms of the “Scuola Normale Superiore” (on request)   In ten minutes walk from the Miracle square you’ ll reach the amazing  Piazza Dei Cavalieri ( Knight’s square). In middle ages this was the political centre of Pisa(here is located the famous prison tower of Conte Ugolino della Gherardesca…), but lately, under the Medici family, it evolved  in the square we can see today. Cosimo Ist founded the military and sacred order of the knights of Santo Stefano and still today we can admire their palaces: The “Carovana “palace with the fascinating graffiti by Giorgio Vasari which nowadays hosts the “Scuola Normale Superiore”.   Upon request, and in certain periods, you’ ve go the chance to visit the rooms in Palazzo della Carovana which once were reserved to Santo Stefano’s  Knights and the Count Ugolino’s tower, hosting now a library.   Walking by  the river sides the marvellous sight will delight you, and, with the expert guidance of your tour guide you can experience the feeling of the medievalPisa. By theArno river the scenary is spectacular, buildings of the 14th, 15th, 16th centuries are the amazing scenery for the river flowing.   A jewel forPisa, located by the river side, the gothic church of “Santa Maria della Spina”. Not to mention the wonderful building of the church of the Saint Sepulcher, XII century, one of the major architecture in our Pisan Romanesque style, on central octagonal plan.   Still close to our river two museums to be visited: the Saint Mathew’s museum and the RoyalPalace’s one. During warm months it’s enjoyable to have a ride tour on the boat.   This tour takes about one hour (without visiting the museums or the boat tour).
